Roberto Montoya, 91, a resident of La Madera, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on Friday, August 30, 2019.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Epimenia Montoya; two grand-daughters, Serena Lee Garcia and Teresita Archuleta; his parents, Juan Lorenzo and Reyecitas Montoya; all his siblings, Ben Montoya, Eliseo Montoya, Philomena Jaramillo, Fabian Madrid, Eufelia Martinez, Juan Montoya, Rubel Montoya, Rufinita Clokey, and Anastasio Montoya.
Roberto was born in La Madera in 1928 and resided there most of his life. A devout Catholic, Roberto entrusted his life to the Fraternida Piadosa de Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno in La Madera.
He is survived by his sons, Robert Montoya Jr. and wife Rosemary of Santa Fe, Rudy Montoya and wife Elva of Espanola, daughters, Lillie Martinez and husband Felix of El Rito, Elsie Archuleta and husband Sam of El Rito, Bernadette Gallegos and husband Stephen of El Rito. Roberto had 15 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter whom he loved deeply, 4 sisters-in-law, Nestorita Montoya of La Madera, Elsie Lovato of Espanola, Odelsia Chacon of Canon de Vallecitos, and Zela Martinez of Leadville Colorado, two brothers-in-law, Horacio Martinez and wife Cordy of Canon de Vallecitos and Manuel Martinez and wife Mary Agnes of Espanola, and many, many nieces and nephews whom he cherished and loved being with.
Roberto was an amazing husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, who will never be forgotten and will always be loved.
Public visitation will begin on Saturday, August 31, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. at the Fraternida Piadosa de Nuestro Padre Jesus Morada in La Madera, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. A second rosary will be recited on Sunday, September 1, at 7:00 p.m. at the Rivera Family Funeral Home in Espanola. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 3rd , 2019, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ojo Caliente, with interment to follow at the La Madera Catholic Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers Bert Montoya, Daryl Montoya, Jamie Martinez, Fred Martinez, Joel Vargas and Adrian Porchas, honorary pallbearers are grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family of Roberto Montoya has entrusted the care of their loved one to the Rivera Family Funeral Home in Espanola, NM.

Our sincere condolences to the entire family. I have fond memories going back to my childhood of Roberto. As an adult whenever I saw him he called me by name and greeted me with a big hug even though at times it may had been years since I had seen him; both he and Epimenia made it feel like it had been like yesterday.
