Alonzo O. Martinez, a resident of La Madera, NM, age 81, passed away peacefully following a short illness, on Friday, September 20, 2019, surrounded by his beloved wife Josefa, his children, and family.
Alonzo, a great man, lived a “Full Life”. He was an honorable, repected, and religious man in his community. Alonzo was born in La Madera, NM and lived there most of his life. Alonzo worked in the mining town of Gilman, Colorado for 17 years. Then he moved his family back to La Madera and continued a second career as a heavy equipment operator at the Ojo Caliente Patrol. He retired from the New Mexico State Highway Department with 25 years service.
Alonzo spent his retirement time with his wife, never parting from her side, enjoying life. He enjoyed traveling, camping, and his cup of coffee. He was known as the community care-taker, always coming to the aide of the elderly and sick. Along with his wife, he served several terms as Mayordomo of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe Church and helped the Hermanos de la Morada where he was born. Alonzo was truly God’s soldier and now is our guardian angel. His presence will be greatly missed, and we celebrate his eternal life in heaven.
Alonzo was preceded in death by his father Jose B. Martinez, granddaughter Angelica, brother Juan Lorenzo Martinez, and recently his mother Eufelia Martinez, niece Kristina Martinez, nephew David Valdez Jr. and his uncle Roberto Montoya Sr.
Alonzo is survived by his beloved wife Josefa Martinez - sons: Michael (Diana) Martinez, Freddie (Melissa) Martinez, Chistopher (Maria) Martinez - daughters: Rosalie (Sam) Gallegos, Debbie (Justin) Martinez - grandchildren: Michael Jr (Andrea), Gilbert, Jerrica (Rick), Samantha, Lorina (David), Freddie Jr (Kim), Christopher Jr, and Cruz - great grandchildren: Nathan (God child), Ricky III, Anika, Noah and Thomas - sisters: Tina (Walter) Cisneros, Gloria Valdez, Tita (Joe) Gurule, Joanne Hout - brothers: Tino (Velma) Martinez, Ben (Balvina) Martinez - Brother-In-Laws: Presiliano (Esperanza) Roybal, Joe (Tina) Roybal, Leroy (Sylvia) Roybal - Sister-In-Laws: Edulia (Harvey) Barela, Esperanza (Efrain) Soto, Rosemary (Robert) Montoya, and many family members and friends.
Public viewing will begin at 6:00 p.m. and Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25, 2019 at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Espanola, NM. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 26, 2019, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Ojo Caliente, with burial following at the La Madera Catholic Cemetary. Serving Pallbearers are: Michael Martinez Jr, Gilbert Martinez, Freddie Martinez Jr, Daryl Montoya, Eloy Montoya (God child), Randy Martinez – Alternates: Rick Chavez Jr, and David Garcia - Honorary Pallbearers: grandchildren, great grandchildren, other God children: Melissa Gurule, Ronnie Gallegos, Miguel and Gloria Martinez (Marriage God children). Alonzo was an amazing son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, padrino, and friend who will never be forgotten and will always be loved.
