David Alfonso Soveranez, 76, was born on July 2, 1945 to Abelino and Alicia Soveranez in Cañones, NM. David retired from the City of Santa Fe in 2015, he also worked for St. Vincent’s Hospital for 17 years. David was a sports icon throughout the State of New Mexico. He was a High School football and basketball official for at least 45 years in which he officiated several post season and State Championship games. David also loved watching the UNM Lobo Football and basketball teams play. Although, his favorite was watching his grandchildren participate in whatever sport they were involved in.
David is in preceded in death by his father, Abelino Soveranez, brothers, Andrew and Jeff Soveranez, and grandson Kenneth Kuhlen. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Anna Soveranez, son David Ray Soveranez (Tammy) of Nambe, daughter Felicia Soveranez Maloney (Ryan) of San Diego, CA and his grandsons that he absolutely adored, Andres and Mateo Soveranez, Ethan Maloney, and special young lady he considered his granddaughter, Kaylee Kelleher.
He also survived by his mother, Alicia Soveranez, siblings, Marcella Romero (Mike), Phyllis Romero (Eddie), Ferminia Najera (Ernesto), Art Soveranez, Ben Soveranez (Arlene), Joann Martinez, (Tony), Louie Soveranez, Barbara Soveranez, Robert Soveranez (Monica), Daniel Pat Soveranez, Paula Padilla (Frank), Allen Soveranez (Melissa) and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A rosary will be recited promptly on Monday, January 3, 2022 at 7:00 pm at the Rivera Funeral Home in Santa Fe. The Mass funeral will take place on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis de Assisi at 10:00am with a burial to follow at Memorial Gardens on Rodeo Road.
Pallbearers are Andres Soveranez, Mateo Soveranez and Ethan Maloney.
Honorary pallbearers: Joseph F. Gutierrez, Jose Andres (Andy) Garcia, Paul Serrano.

He always gave me a hard time on the softball field - always with his great smile! It was great to see him at games - whether he was cheering or officiating - and often saw him at mass with his loving wife. May loving memories of him comfort you during this difficult time. Anna, we are so sorry for your loss, and were so worried when we heard about David in the Hospital, regret not being able to see him before he deceased, I have so many wonderful and funny memories growing up together in Canones, one is when David would form Basketball teams, brackets for Tournaments and had us play in on outside dirt Court, he would be our Referee, always loved Sports. There are so many memories of uncle that I have of him,but there's one that stands out the most.Growning up he coached me in basketball and in football,he always pushed me hard in both sports. I would always wonder why is he so tough on me.One day my freshman year at Santa fe high they invited all the refs that would be calling all the games that year,uncle was there talking to the team .After the meeting was done he pulled me aside and was so happy to see that I was there.Thats when uncle said something to me that I will never forget,he said Joseph all those times I was hard on you was to get you to this moment .You stuck it out and continued to play high school football now it's up to you to keep it going and give it all you can.That moment changed my life Now I know why now ,And I will always keep that happy moment about him.
