Maria Valdez

Irene Valdez, age 79 and a lifelong resident of Vadito, NM, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2020. A beloved daughter, sister, and aunt, Irene was one of the youngest of twelve children, born on January 27, 1941 to Juan and Fedelina Valdez. She was preceded in death by her parents; siblings (in birth order) and (in-laws) Alfonso Valdez, Benedicto Valdez (Alcarita), another Alfonso Valdez, Bernardo Valdez (Corina), Melquiades Valdez, Octaviano Valdez (Adelina), Orcelia Martinez (Eduardo), Juanita Valdez, Estefanita Martinez (Bolivar), and Juanito Valdez. She is survived by her eldest sister, Andreita Romero (Ernesto).

Irene was an unselfish and giving daughter who cared for her mother her entire life at the expense of raising a family of her own. She was a loving sister who enjoyed visiting with her brothers and sisters whenever she could.

In her earlier years, she enjoyed tending to her vegetable garden outdoors and her indoor flowers. She particularly enjoyed helping others in any way she could. Irene never met a stranger because of her loving and charismatic personality.

“Tia Irene”, as she was commonly referred to by her many nephews and nieces and their extended families, too numerous to list, was a caring and giving aunt who always welcomed everyone into her home. She was well known and respected throughout her hometown of Vadito and surrounding communities, as being a kind and humble person. She was the best example of a good “vecina”.

Irene had a gentle soul and a great love for God. She was a devout Catholic who got great joy from singing in the church choir and helping the church in any way possible.

Irene thought the world of her dearest friend and longtime companion, Casimiro Chacon, who cared for her throughout her later years of life. The family of Irene wishes to extend a sincere and heartfelt thanks to Casimiro for being with and caring for her and bringing much joy and happiness.

Irene was loved and will be missed by all who knew her. Due to restrictions related to the current COVID-19 virus pandemic, a private gravesite service was held. Pallbearers at the gravesite service were Clyde Romero, Christopher Romero (alternate: Lorenzo Romero), Alfonso Valdez, Herbert Valdez, Wilbert Valdez, and Matthew Fuentes. Honorary pallbearers are Anthony Valdez and Albert Valdez. A memorial service will be held at a later time when family and friends can gather together to celebrate Irene’s life.
