Ronald John Poulton

November 14th, 1942 - May 10th, 2024

Biography

RONALD J. POULTON (RON), age 81, passed away surrounded by his family in White Rock, New Mexico on Friday, May 10, 2024 after a 9-year battle with cancer caused by Agent Orange exposure during his service in the Vietnam War.

Ron was born in Vineland, New Jersey on November 14th, 1942 to the lateGeorge and Barbara (Kantz) Poulton and raised in Bridgeton, New Jersey by his single mother and later with his stepfather, Frank Schaffer (both deceased).

He joined the U.S. Air Force at seventeen and served for over 26 years. He served 14 of those years overseas with tours in England, Spain, Southwest Asia, Africa, and Germany, where he met his wife of 60 years, Ilse (Neumann) Poulton.

Ron earned the Bronze Star, three Meritorious Service medals, Air Force Commendation and Air Force Achievement medals, and over 25 other awards and medals while mentoring and inspiring “his troops” during his years of service.

The highlight of Ron’s military career was his four years stationed at the United States Air Force Academy where he was Superintendent of the Structures Branch of the Civil Engineering Squadron.

He retired as a Senior Master Sergeant before being employed at Radford University in Virginia by the Facilities Management Department as a Buildings and Grounds Superintendent. Upon retiring from Radford University, Ron and his wife moved to North Carolina. From there, they continued their love of travel whether on cruises, to the mountains, or at the beach with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Ilse, daughter Michele, and son John, all of White Rock, New Mexico; grandchildren Katja Fitz (Andre) and Mackenna Fitz of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Cameron Poulton, US Navy Port Hueneme, California; sisters Kathy King and Gail Bernard of Bellingham, Washington; Deb Arneson and Lorri Taylor of Sterling, Illinois, and Peggy Dill of Harker Heights, Texas; and brother Drew Bernard of Kenya, Africa.

The Poulton family gives a special thank you to Dr. Glendon Cook for his care and compassion. Thanks also to Dr. Fei Gu and nurse Crystal Valdez, nurse Kathy at the Los Alamos Medical Center Infusion Center, and Los Alamos Visiting Nurses Hospice staff, especially nurse Melissa.

Please consider donating in memory of Ron to St. Jude’s Childrens’ Hospital, The Gary Sinise Foundation in support of disabled veterans, or in Ron’s words: “Do something nice to help a stranger.”

A great personal friend to me and my family, who will be truly missed.
Always ready with his quick wit. You could rely on Ron to be there whenever needed. I will miss our phone conversations, which we had often. Having served both in the military and civilian life together, he was life a brother to me and my family. Our family now has an empty space in it. Rest in Peace my friend.

Ronnie and I were best friends. We grew up on Cohansey Street, Bridgeton,N.J. We would spend a lot of time reminiscing about. the good old days. I was 17 and went into the Marine Corps. Ronnie was 17 he bugged his mother Barbara to know in to join the Air Force, she finally gave in. we lost track of each other until he moved to N.C.with his wife Ilse, my wife and I went and visited them. We had so much fun. Ronnie loved to talk about his family. He would talk about them often. We would call each other every chance we got; he was cracking jokes right up to the end. We want to send our condolences to Ilse and family we loved him very much. He is in a better place, and I will meet him again .

Ron poured his heart into planning ahead for his family, and it was such a blessing to get to know him during this time. What a kind man to always give thanks and praise to others during his time of illness. It is a honor to see his wishes through. I appreciate Ron's service to us as a country and also as a community. --Amber

When I visited the Poulton house a couple of years ago to see my friend Michele, Ron and I shared an evening watching the annual Memorial Day Concert and military tribute on TV. I am also a veteran, so when we both had tears streaming from our eyes for the amazing patriotism being honored on TV, it created a warm memory I will always cherish. Thanks Ron, for an unforgettable evening, and thanks Michele, for sharing your family with me.

Ronnie and I served in Vietnam 67-68. we were with the 823rd Red Horse Squadron- Tan San Nhut Air Force Base. We got to know each and became friends almost immediately. We were sent down to Vung Tau on a Friday to review some contract work and our boss told us both to stay the weekend and come back on a Monday. We had a great time. upon our return I was sent back home but we stayed in contact over the years. We eventually hooked up again thru our Red Horse reunion after we both retired from the Air Force. It was awesome to meet up again and meeting Lise. Spent the night in their home and chit chatted about old times. Again, another reunion in Bowling Green we met again. Kip and I again enjoyed the company of both of Ron and Lise. We cannot express how we both felt about a man who fought this battle for at least 9 years, that I know of. He may have finally lost the battle but has continually gained all of our respect and admiration for his fight. Ronnie, you're at peace now and i truly know the family will miss you but they will always remember the good times. Rest in Peace My Friend. You will never be forgotten!!!! THAT'S FOR SURE, THAT'S FOR DANG SURE!!
