I knew Steve as a younger man in Taos in the 1970's. He was a good friend from the old days, and I'm very sad to see of his passing. Thank you, Steve, for many wonderful moments.

In the 1970’s, Steve lived in OKC. I attended Oklahoma City University when we met.
I went out with him and cared for him deeply.

Jim Hochanadle is in Nashville and goes by the name of Jim Hoke which is what we called him in the coffeehouse days. He and Steve were a great pair to have on that stage.

I had the pleasure of knowing Steve in Norman, Oklahoma. when I worked at the Pickin' Parlour music store on campus corner in the 1070's. Steve was a much more accomplished flatpicker, and he generously spent time jamming with Greg Henkle and myself, showing us licks without making us feel silly. Steve's sense of humor and his delightful musicianship were inspiring to us as we learned about bluegrass music and life. I had the pleasure of hearing news of Steve over the years after he moved to New Mexico, through our mutual friend David Coe, another fine player with whom Steve performed as a part of the Sagebrush Trio. Steve was a fine musician and a nice man.

I knew Steve when I went to Oklahoma City University in 1969.
I cared for him very deeply and we had loving relationship.
I’m not certain what made me think of him tonight. I miss him and will always hold him in my heart.

I knew Steve as a performer of great popularity among the OCU students. It was called The Sword and Stone Coffeehouse. I attended his Memorial Service which was sad as I had recently lost my brother. I do have the two discs that were given out after the service.

Somehow it never occurred to me that this incredible man would not be here forever or that those guitar pickin' sounds (harmonies, too) would not be something I could hear again. My memories are these:
Bah Humbug (a shared Christmas sentiment)--delivering a couch to him @ the Sagebrush (requiring several co-conspirators). Poker games with Sandra & Seaver, Blueberry pies (my secret plot to seduce him that never worked) and the only walk we did together up El Salto where he outdid me, of course, by a mile--without making me look bad. He was such a special man and a constant intermittent influence on my existence.

Hi,
I played in a trio )Tres Cajones) with Steve in '88/'89. Played at the Sagebrush, on the ski hill, and in Sante Fe. I'm deeply saddened to learn of his passing. He was a musician of the highest calibre and a fine fine man with a highly evolved sense of humor. Here's a quote about Steve that has been up on my website (as part of my bio)for sometime now: " Tres Cajones with Steve Gavula preachin' the gospel of C.F. Martin until they had to two step just to save their souls". I miss him, and I send my (belated) condolences along to you and to everyone who was close to him.
In memory,
Jesse McRae

I first met Steve playing at Woody's on Taos Plaza one afternoon in June 1976. He remained a friend until I left Taos in January 1981. I still remember laughing about the "peekle" garden by his house on the Rim. See ya' later Amigo.

I just learned of Steve's death and I'm still in shock. I haven't seen much of Steve in recent years and it amazes me that it was over 20 years ago that we played music at the Sagebrush Inn. I lived with Steve for a couple of years in his little house overlooking a beautiful valley on your way up to Taos Ski Valley. We played a ton of music, drank pots of coffee, hiked up many mountain trails, threw darts, played poker, read books, and indulged in some vices that I won't go into here. He was one of the smartest and most talented people I've ever known and he taught me a lot about music and the mountains and how to enjoy life. I am so sorry to hear that he is gone and I will miss him. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family in New Mexico and in Oklahoma. Steve was a good man and he lived a good life.

Steve was te glue that held the Sagebrush Trio together.
Many nights we played together. He held us to a high standard of musicianship and after the job we always laughed. With him are some of the best memories in many years of making music.
He will be missed. Gary Roller

Steve was my partner and pal and not a day goes by that I don't think of him. We played every honky tonk in NM, and much of my musical education came from those wonderful years. I'll truly miss one of my best friends.

What a beautiful message of Steve's life. His life was more beautiful because of you.

I met Steve in 1967, when we were students at Oklahoma State University. We were just down a couple of doors there in old Bennett Hall. The first time I saw him he had his Martin (Said he was from New York...we believed him) and the last time I saw him he was playing his Martin. I soon left for Vietnam and lost all touch with him. My deepest condolences to his wife Dawn and his family. Steve took time to teach me a few licks and to re-light my desire to play...a Martin, of course. I still play one too! I'm sure you all miss him so.

I apologize for being so late. My wife and I were friends of Steve's from way back. He played at our wedding on July 13, 1983. We hadn't been in touch since our last visit to Taos about six years ago. We just found out about his passing. He was a wonderful man who made the lives of everyone around him better. There's no higher praise than that. We still listen to the recordings my wife made of his playing back in 1980 or so. A true loss. Please accept our most heartfelt condolences.
