Alfredia Irene Quick

Alfredia Irene Quick was born in Falls City, Nebraska on March 2, 1928 to Delene and Alfred Davis, a train engineer for Missouri Pacific Railroad. She died surrounded by her family at St. Vincent’s Hospital, where she worked and volunteered for over 50 years on January 9, 2023. Alfredia was raised in Kansas City, MO. Her mother was a Rosie the Riveter volunteer during World War II and made radios in a factory. Alfredia trained as a Registered Nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Kansas City, MO where she also had all of her children. She married her first husband, George Andrew Jakobe, Jr, in 1950 and had two children before she became a widow. In 1962 she married her second husband R. Frank Quick, a widower, who had four of his own children.  Together they had two more children and relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1966 in order to buy the Western Auto Store. Alfredia worked at the old St. Vincent’s hospital in downtown Santa Fe as a nurse on the floor as well as the new St. Vincent’s, including a stint during the Santa Fe Prison Riot where she vividly remembered wading through the crowds of families of the prison inmates desperately hoping for information about their loved ones on her way to work, escorted by armed national guardsmen. Always wearing a white uniform complete with a starched white hat, she was very much the professional trained in the art and science of nursing. As the admitting nurse, she was often the first person many encountered to begin their process of being admitted to the hospital. After 25 years of service, Alfredia retired in 1993. Upon retirement, she started volunteering at the hospital in the admitting department and when she no longer could walk the long corridors all day, she began making tray favors for patients. She provided over 50 years of service to St. Vincent’s Hospital. After retirement, Alfredia enjoyed traveling to Canada and New Orleans, England, Scotland and Ireland and to see the fall colors on the East Coast but her most endearing memories are those with her grandchildren.

Alfredia was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, her brothers Alfred and Tommy Davis, her sister Patricia R. Davis, her daughter Mary Patricia Jakobe Gallegos and her son Bob Quick. She is survived by sons: George A. Jakobe, III and his wife Michelle of Overland Park, KS, Mark Quick and his wife Lori of Denver, CO, and Kelly Quick and his wife of over 50 years Anne Quick of Columba, MO; daughters Martha Quick, of Santa Fe, Kay Quick and Vicki Quick of Cleveland, MO. She leaves behind grandsons James Gallegos, Harrison Quick and Justin Quick and wife Laura, and granddaughters Hannah Darland and her husband Caleb, and Sophia Quick and great grandsons Austin and Ashton Quick. She is also survived by her dear friend Sam Salvo, daughter-in-law Cynthia Vollmer and son-in-law Nelson Gallegos.

The family would like to thank the incredible staff & volunteers at Kitchen Angels who were instrumental in brightening Alfredia’s last days in her home of over 50 years, as well as the wonderful caregivers at Legacy of Santa Fe, and all of her nurses at St. Vincent’s Hospital. A mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church on Friday, February 3, 2023 at 11:30 am with a rosary service at the church on the same day at 10:30. Burial will follow at 3 at Rivera.
