Biography

Barry Arthur Asby, born in 1962, passed from this life on September 14. A member of the Taos community for over forty years, he most recently lived in Carson, where he was a valued, helpful resident.

A lifelong outdoorsman and adventurer, he was also a talented artist who specialized in Sage Warrior totems, which were credited for saving several lives. Once called a crazy shaman, he delighted all who loved him with his brilliant antics.

When growing up, he lived in Virginia, Los Angeles, San Diego and Palm Springs

Barry attended the Desert Sun School, went to Alaska at 18 and worked on crab boats before returning to Taos, panning for gold whenever he could, and taking yearly trips to gather white sage in Southern California.

Barry found dogs to be the most worthy and loyal companions  — and through the years, he provided safe haven for many furry friends whom he considered family members. All but his last pup, Sammy, were named Max.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Debra Lee Asby, and his mother, Janice Lee Rivers Forehand. He is survived by his father, Arthur Asby; his brother, Travis Spitzer, his sister-in-law, Alison Spitzer, his nephew and neices, Arthur Merrick Spitzer, Ashlin Elisabeth Spitzer and Scarlett Anne Spitzer, and pups, Sammy and Revy; his son, Ryan Kadel, and grandsons Noah Hardy and Hezekiah Hunter Brooks.

Donations to Stray Hearts in his name are appreciated. There will be a Celebration of Life on October 10th; 2 pm at the John Dunne Bridge, then 4 pm at the Carson Café in Carson.
