Beverly Ann McCrary

February 17th, 1943 - January 25th, 2021

Biography

Beverly McCrary (LeMunyon), born February 17, 1943 in Kansas City, Kansas has died. She was the daughter of Ralph McCrary and Bonnie Hickson McCrary who came to live in Santa Fe in 1947.

Beverly graduated cum laude from the College of Santa Fe to become a caring teacher at Santa Fe High School for twenty-two years. Upon retiring she traveled to Japan, Turkey, Mexico, India and Morocco primarily to experience their culture as well as to purchase ethnic inspired fabrics for sewing into Palestinian-style garments which she often wore. Beverly took great pleasure in learning about cultures other than her own, particularly their architecture, food, crafts, and traditional clothing. Early in retirement she started reading and sewing groups which are still active.

Beverly loved cats, folk art, fabrics, reading, designing, sewing clothing, neighbors, chocolate cake and green chile.

Survivors include two cats, close friends Robert LeMunyon, Hannah Hibbs, Jon Schaefer, Robert Wolf, Bonnie Koloc, Susan Yanda, cousins Rita Webb, Ron McCrary, Dick McCrary and their spouses and many relatives and friends.

A sharing memories gathering will be held at the Unitarian Church on the corner of Barcelona and Galisteo. Visit riverafamilyfuneralhome.com for service dates and times.

My friendship with Beverly goes back many decades and my husband Jerry and I were among the original members of the Book Club Beverly started in late 1993. The club is still going strong and we have read a total of 283 books over 27 years! As an English teacher, Beverly was certainly a reader, and it was a great pleasure over the years for us to join her in reading and talking about the worlds and ideas these books opened up for us. We are an eclectic group, both men and women. While our membership changed over the years, most ended up long-term members. We were open to any book choice, so we read and discussed many books we would never have discovered on our own. Beverly's book club truly gave us a wide-ranging literary feast over many years and wonderful friendships that we cherish. I think I speak for all of the members when I say thanks Beverly. We love and miss you and hope to continue the club you enjoyed so much.

I too taught at SFHS for many years and remember Beverly as a new teacher coming in. We somehow connected as friends for many hears. I was part of the "walking wounded" from the Fiesta 1971 and she was able to drive me to and from school while recovering from a broken knee. I was truly moved to hear of her passing. She will remain in my memory as a true friend.

I was one of Ms. McCrary's students years ago at SFHS in the early 70's I remember her as being very helpful and supportive to me as a freshman. I ran into her about a year ago at the grocery store, I spoke to her an told her that I had been one of her students and have fond memories being in her class. She was so grateful I had recognized and spoken to her. I too am blessed to have seen her all these years later and had the opportunity to speak with her again. RIP Ms. McCrary

Our mutual interest in textiles brought Beverly and me together many years ago. I introduced her to my collection of West African art and fabric and we shared a passion for travel and textiles, good conversation and good food. Not long after we met, she invited me to join the sewing group she had started. I protested that I didn't sew; she responded, "...but you like textiles and we like you." It was the beginning of a warm and deepening friendship with a group of like-minded, creative women who share the loss of a great friend and sister. I came to admire Beverly's sharp intelligence, ready wit, outspoken opinions and personal style. She and I were "war babies" born into the uncertain middle of WWII, at a time when few people ventured to start a family. We lived in similar rambling old adobe houses not far from the Santa Fe Plaza. We met monthly with our fellow "textillians" and we shared the occasional cup of tea and conversation at our respective residences.
She taught English to my son Charles at Santa Fe High. She took satisfaction in knowing her former student now teaches math and physics at an Albuquerque community college and he shares our loss.
Rest in peace, sister/friend. I miss you.

Ms. McCrary was my high school English teacher many, many years ago but someone I never forgot. I saw her a few times in recent years and she hadn't changed - still upbeat and funny. She had a way of looking at you that made you feel really seen. I'm glad I knew her.

The members of the Ethnic Sewing Group will certainly miss Beverly!
She was a vibrant personality in our group which she founded in the 1990's. We often met in the sewing room of her vintage Santa Fe adobe house. She would be wearing one of her spectacular Palestinian dresses which she had stitched. There, surrounded by shelves of colorful fabric which she purchased from India, Morocco, Guatemala & Japan, she would comment on the cut of international garments or share her excitement about the upcoming Folk Market. When next the Sewing Group gathers, Beverly will be in our hearts!

Beverly was one of my New Mexico cousins making her immediately exotic. Her travels, readings, and political views added to her persona. Always a delight in conversation we shared a worldview beyond my Oklahoma roots. She introduced me at the tender age of 12 to Catcher In The Rye. Wow - what an English teacher. Beverly- I plan on seeing you on the other side.

Beverly, was my 1st cousin, her mother Bonnie (Hickson) McCrary was my mother's sister. Since she lived in Santa Fe and I live in Oklahoma City, we did not see each other very often, the last time was two or so years ago when I came to Santa Fe with my sister Bonnie. We had a delightful visit. She was always very loving and thoughtful to me. We communicated through email and occasionally by phone. I will miss her but know she is not in pain and is at peace. This comforts me.

I was delighted to reconnect with Beverly after many years through the sewing group that she started. She was creative, full of humor and wit, and cheerful in spite of dealing with challenges. She focused on higher levels. I will miss her. May she rest in peace and beauty.
