Brosl Hasslacher

May 13th, 1941 - November 11th, 2005

Biography

Dr. Brosl Hasslacher – Age 64, a longtime resident of Nambe and noted theoretical physicist and staff member in T division at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1982 to 2004, passed away on Friday, November 11th, 2005 following a lengthy illness.
Born in New York City on May 13, 1941, Brosl attended Harvard University and went on to receive his PhD in Physics from the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1971. From there he went on to work at various places including the University of Illinois, CalTech, the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, and several institutes in France and Switzerland; before moving to Los Alamos in 1981 as a Visiting Scientist at the Center for Nonlinear Studies.
Brosl joined Los Alamos National Laboratory in October 1982 as a staff member for T division and went on to found the Institute for Physical Science at Los Alamos in 1994. Brosl took an entrepreneurial leave of absence from Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1999 to found, (along with four other scientists) the Molecular Electronics Corporation which had as its goal the self-assembly of diverse molecular electronics products. In 2004, Brosl was one of the founders of Nanostar Inc., a company that was trying to commercialize unique devices coming out of research into nanotechnology.
Brosl's theoretical interests ranged far and wide from field theory to quantum-gravity and black holes, from lattice-gas hydrodynamics to robotics and biochemistry and the possibility of living machines. In the last few months, Brosl had been working on theories of surface nano-plasmonics and Hawking radiation from toy black holes.
Brosl is survived by a daughter, Elisabeth, two sons, Davi and Manuel, and former wife, Marie Cazenave of France. He is also survived by his mother, a sister, and three granddaughters. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 19th at 3 o'clock in the afternoon in the chapel of Block-Salazar Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of your choice in Brosl's name. A formal memorial fund will be established on a later date. The family of Dr. Brosl Hasslacher has placed their trust in the Rivera family of Block-Salazar Mortuary & Community Crematory for his funeral arrangements.

I found myself thinking about my friend and stumbled across this page today, in December 2008. In spite of the words I've spoken in Brosl's honor previously I felt I must sign this now, late as it is.

I am heart sick to have just now learned of the passing of Dr Brosl Hasslacher. A man of deep convictions, brillant, and most importantly a friend. My sympathies go out to his Mother Elizabeth, sister Anne, and Daughter Elizabeth all to whom I have known, during my stay in Babylon NY. Dr Hasslacher will be missed by the scientic communtiy. May his soul rest in eternal peace...John e Bonsignor

I am very sad to hear about Brosl's illness and death. He was a great influence on me as a student. His passion for physics and for finding one's own path through life were inspiring.

I can see him in his adobe in Nambe admonishing me that anything involving a computer would take ten times as long as one would expect at first, and that it's always worth thinking harder first.

I will always appreciate the support and encouragement that he provided. Though he has passed on, his memory will surely endure.

I was sorry to hear of Dr. Hasslacher's death. In the early 1990's I was an editor on the Laboratory-Directed Research and Development Report, and he was one of the scientists I worked with. He was always courteous, helpful, and respectful (which is more than I can say about other scientists I've worked with!). He was an admirable human being as well as a brilliant researcher, and I'm sure he will be sorely missed on both counts.

We met Brosl in the 1980's and enjoyed many parties at his home in Nambe. He was not only a brilliant scientist, but a wonderful musician and engaging conversationalist. He had a warm smile and was easy to like. After we moved to Montana, we spoke less and less over the years but the friendship never diminished. When will remember him fondly and regret we cannot attend his memorial. We send our warmest wishes to his family and friends. Tom and Darla Sather

To Brosl's family with deepest sympathy:
Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Even though it is many years since our paths crossed I still mourn Brosl's passing. In graduate school he was perhaps my closest friend. I had a high regard for his scientific abilities and creativity. In my early career I was fortunate to have him as a collaborator as well as a friend.

I am sorry that I cannot be present at the memorial service, but rest assured that I will be there in spirit.

Do let me know when funds are established in his memory.

May what he gave to you in his life help console you in your grief.
regards, Don.

A late bon voyage to you, Brosl. I just stumbled across your notice. It seems a long time since we had long conversations about things I no longer remember when we were both in the Barkas Group in Berkeley. RIP
