David Bebout, born to Ruth and William Bebout in 1951, passed peacefully in his sleep on January 9th, 2024. David was raised along with his brother John, in Lake Jackson, Texas. David attended Thurgood Marshall School of Law, before going on to become one of Houston's most prominent attorneys. Throughout his years in the field, he fought to represent the widows and the working class of Texas who were harmed by big business interests. At the young age of 45, David retired and moved to Taos, New Mexico to raise his two children, Halley and Sam. David loved the beauty of New Mexico, and was fascinated by its culture, and archaeological history. Being an avid reader, he devoured multiple books weekly. In March of 2023, David welcomed his Granddaughter Elody, whom he loved very much. David loved his morning coffee and all of his friends at the World Cup Coffee, where he "held court," daily. He will be sorely missed by all of his friends and family.
Celebration of life will be held on February 3, 2024 from 1-4 PM at Taos Inn Adobe Bar.

David and I met when we were both on the Board for the Taos Center for the Arts and we became fast friends. Some of our favorite memories were hanging with David at the Taos Inn and World Cup Coffee where we enjoyed the simple. pure pleasure of rich conversation. David was a deep thinker with strong opinions and he loved to banter both with witt and humour and a Houston drawl. Whether it was current affairs, local or national politics or about a book he was reading it was always entertaining in a uniquely Bebout way. We will miss his laugh, “wise guy grin” and of course all the fun when he hosted parties in his home. David, you surprised him us and unexpectedly snuck away before we could finish many conversations (and of course voting). Amigo, we’ll miss you and God’s speed.

David was a good person who accomplished many great things. He was a fun tennis partner for me and a social standout at many an evening soiree. He added much to the culture in Taos; he will be missed.

It has taken me a few days to wrap my head around this. it is still so hard to image someone so virbrant, no longer . I met David and Christine in the 1980's in Houston. Boy did we have fun. I always tagged along like the third wheel to many outings...music venues, museums, resturants, plays, yoga....alway somthing new and interesting. I then started dating a lawyer that happened to know David as well...we continued the fun as couples. David was so unique, intelligent and quirky and mainstream all at the same time.
Mike and I cherish those times.

Sad to learn of Dave’s passing. He and I had been roommates for 2 years as undergraduates at the University of Houston. Always a fun loving friend. So glad he spent so many enjoyable years in Taos. RIP brother

Sam & Halley, we were shocked and very sad to hear of David's passing. Our deepest sympathy to you and your family. I had just moved to Houston from Chicago in 1980 and was hired to be David's secretary. He made endless fun of my Yankee traits. I learned so much from him given the vast amount of time we spent with each other. We enjoyed the clients, working cases together. He taught me the cool things about Houston, music, art, restaurants and he taught me a lot of life lessons throughout the years. David was so unique, had great taste, was a wonderful host, was very funny and loved being a father and grandfather. We enjoyed so much visiting you in Taos. David took us on an archeological tour one visit and snowshoeing with Sam on another. He also took us skiing because that's what we wanted to do. He was so kind and generous. David will be deeply missed. Love you all.
