Faye was quite a special woman who I was blessed to know. Many hours were spent talking, sharing stories, having lunch and more. , We drove around St. Louis before she moved to Santa Fe looking at her prior homes, sentimental spots and of course she wanted to go back to Meramec school. She wanted to look one last time at her home away from home and reflect on her work family and children. we were able to see the statue and bench she lovingly gave when she retired. Faye loved teaching and she loved every child she came in contact with. Faye saw the good in everyone. The angels in Heaven are singing along as she plays her piano.

Mrs. A as we called her was my first grade teacher. She was the best teacher I’ve ever had, a truly remarkable woman who shaped who I am today. My love and prayers to her family.

Ms. A was also my first grade teacher (in the early 90s at Meramec Elementary in Clayton, MO). She remains the most impactful teacher of my entire life. I just randomly googled her, as I probably do a couple times a year whenever she pops into my mind. I'm gutted to learn that she passed away just last month, but I am comforted by the knowledge that she made an enduring positive impact on several generations of young students during her life.
She possessed an almost supernatural aura of warmth and empathy, and she famously wrote and sang catchy and heartfelt songs, which she would play for us on her all-white upright piano.
"A family is a circle of friends who love you / They'll always be there to guide and support you / They can help you grow in such a special way / Each day" was the refrain of her signature song. I used that song as the foundation of a speech I gave at my high school graduation in 2005. One of the biggest regrets in my life is neglecting to invite Ms. A to that graduation ceremony to witness the lasting impact her wise words and music made on me and so many of my classmates. But I was able to express my gratitude to her face-to-face on a couple other occasions in high school, so I try not to beat myself up about it too much.
This is maybe a long shot, but if any of Ms. A's family, friends, or associates have any recordings of her music, or even copies of lyrics and/or sheet music, I would love to get ahold of them. Please email me at jsambakken [at] gmail.com if you can help me out!
My deepest condolences to her family and to anyone else who was lucky enough to cross paths with this legendary woman.

Also, Ms. A was the appellant in a landmark federal court case in 2000 regarding the weight of unpublished opinions as precedent in federal court (literally deemed "the Anastasoff issue" because her case is, to date, the only case to consider this issue). The facts of the case related to Ms. A's attempt to claim a refund on overpaid taxes from several years prior:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anastasoff_v._United_States
TL;DR she lost in District Court and lost on appeal to the 8th Circuit, but the 8th Circuit re-heard the case later in 2000 in light of new precedent and overturned their previous holding. So Ms. A won in the end and got to claim her refund. Absolute legend.
