Freda Brady

Biography

Freda Mitchell Brady, known to many friends and relatives as "Annie," was born on May 2, 1904. She grew up in Dawson, New Mexico, where her family worked on a ranch owned by Phelps Dodge Corporation. She taught school in Dawson and Raton, and in 1933 she married James F. Brady in Taos. For many years she was a homemaker in Walsenburg, Colorado. In the mid-1950s, she and Jim moved to Santa Fe, where Freda worked three years for the Santa Fe City Library before moving to Cibola, New Mexico, to manage Bob's General Store. Retiring from the store, they moved to Espanola, where Freda worked for the Rio Arriba County Library. Some of her duties as librarian included taking the bookmobile to rural communities. She said it made her happy when the children came to take out books. She retired from the library in 1972 and remained in Espanola, a town that she loved very much. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and contributed to the Espanola Hospital Auxiliary's Holly Berry Fair. She is survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, including Mitchell Quandt and Patricia Victour, to whom she was a second mother, and Suzanne Crews and Jami Garrett, beloved friends of Annie, Patricia and Mitchell. A memorial gathering will take place on Friday July 11th at 10:30 in the chapel of Block-Salazar Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation in Freda's name to the Red Cross or the Espanola Hospital Auxiliary, which she volunteered for in past years.

I have many fond memories of spending time with Mitchell at the Bradys when we were growing up. The Bradys and Quandts will always have a special spot in my heart. They were all so nice and kind to me and they made a real difference in my life. Thanks for all the good memories. May they rest in peace.
