Biography


Joan Elizabeth Wheeland passed away February 17, 2007. Joan was born November 18, 1937 in Chillicothe, Ohio, to Russell and Nettie Shoemaker. She is survived by Hoyt Wheeland of Taos, NM, husband of 44 years, daughter Stacey Elizabeth Hammond of Taos, brother Russell Gerald Shoemaker of Albany, OH, grandchildren Jillian Summer Elizabeth Huether of Taos, Cody Alan Stephen Hammond of Taos, Vanessa Nicole Wheeland of Fort Knox, KY, and Julian Stuart Wheeland of Kiowa, OK, and her cat, Licorice. She is predeceased by sons Mark David Wheeland and Hoyt Stephen Wheeland, by her father and mother, and by a brother, Paul Shoemaker. In addition to being a stay-at-home Mom, Joan's professional career included being Manager of Employment Services for the American Chemical Society.

A memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in Taos at a date and time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, the family would like contributions to go to the Joan Wheeland Culinary Arts Scholarship Fund at Centinel Bank of Taos, NM, to benefit deserved Taos High School students.
