John Edward Trujillo

1945 - November 23rd, 2020

Biography

John Edward Trujillo passed away in Angel Fire on November 23, 2020 following a lengthy illness. He was born on May 28, 1945 in Clayton, New Mexico, the tenth of thirteen siblings. He spent his childhood making mischief on the Anchor D cattle ranch outside of Texhoma, Oklahoma, where his father worked as a foreman. John, or JT as most people knew him, graduated from St. Michael’s High School in Santa Fe in 1963. A stand-out running back, he went on to play football at Highlands University, graduating with a degree in business administration and higher education. In 1967, he enlisted in the United States Army and served a tour in Vietnam, receiving two purple hearts and two bronze stars for his service. After his discharge from the Army, he moved to San Antonio, Texas where he worked as the financial aid director at San Antonio Community College. He returned to New Mexico and eventually settled in the Moreno Valley. An avid outdoorsman, JT guided hunts for many years. His work in real estate allowed him to spend much of his time traversing the mountains, usually with a good friend in the passenger’s seat to keep him company. In 1983, he married Linda Maschmeier, a young widow with three children. Eventually his path led him back to education. He spent time in the classroom with children of all ages and coached football in Santa Fe and Taos before becoming an administrator. In his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with Linda in their motorhome, riding his Missouri Fox Trotters and exploring the expansive wilderness he so loved from behind the wheel of his pickup or The General. Anyone who knew JT knows he loved to tell a story, and it was often hard to separate fact from fiction. What is not hard to imagine is how much he will be missed by the friends and family who survive him.

In lieu of flowers, donations in JT’s memory may be sent to the National Veterans Wellness and Healing Center of Angel Fire, Inc., P.O. Box 805, Angel Fire, NM 87710.

John Trujillo served in the United States Army as a infantry Squard leader and company commander with Delta Company 5/60th, 9th Infantry Division, during 1968 and 1969. I served as his Platoon Radio Telephone Operator, (RTO) in 1969. We all repected LT John and we knew his decision would keep us out of harms way. We who served with LT John Trujillo are proud to call John a professional soldier and friend, RIP John, Ernest Saldivar and all who served with Delta Company 5/60th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division.

JT will truly be missed in many ways. His patience with others, his loyalty to America, his helpful attitude to community and his friends will truly be missed. Even his opinion of politics and the state of Nation was unique.
Thanks for all the knowledge that you provided my family. You will be greatly missed.

Lt. T was my Tactical Officer (aka Drill Instructor) in Infantry Officer Candidate's School Ft. Benning GA Oct 67-May 68. He was as tough as you might expect and as hard and demanding as you would want when knowing that within a few months you would be leading men in Battle.
We were the same age but he was my older brother. He helped mold and inspire me. After OCS I became a Special Forces Officer and then successful attorney but it all started with him.
I had no contact with him for over 40 years but we reconnected a few years ago and a joy to my life was reliving the glory of our youth. A part of my life died with him.

J T and I were classmates 1967 in Infantry OCS. We served in different combat divisions in Vietnam. He was a genuine American hero, a passionate Patriot, and well aware his character was a model for others to emulate — failure to him would to have been found lacking integrity: J T didn’t fail in living that sterling example. I remember him from running track at NMHU. While I played football I

also ran track and he ran the 100 and 220 as did I. He was fast. And, he was a good man.

Linda, I am so sorry. I had some wonderful memories of riding with JT to Wheeler Peak through Red River. I also remember the time we had the horses trailered on the incline to your home when one slipped on the poop and the other horses trampled him but he recovered. I also have other memories of riding with JT like the time we went behind Eagle Nest and viewed the entire valley from an rock out croping. May his memory be a blessing to you and your kids. I know the kids will miss him tremendously. W/ love, Andy Vargas
