Joopeng Chan Chinlund

Biography

JooPeng Chan Chinlund passed away on November 1, 2009 after suffering a massive stroke on Friday. JooPeng was born in Medan, on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia on August 28, 1932. She told many stories to her children of the tropical paradise she lived in as a child in the 1930s and the challenges that she and her family survived during the subsequent Japanese occupation during WW2. During the occupation, Peng was able to study piano and won a piano competition in Singapore in 1951.

She came to the United States in 1952, where she received her BA from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1955. She then moved to New York City to study from master piano teacher, Beveridge Webster, and worked as a guide at the newly formed United Nations. She met Thomas Joseph Chinlund in New York and they were married in 1957 in Medan.

From 1957 to 1968 JooPeng and Tom lived in Ohio, New Jersey and Illinois, before moving back to in New York City where they raised their two children, Monica Siang Lee and Augustus Ho and continued to reside until 2001 when they moved to their current home in Taos.

JooPeng loved to play the music of Chopin, Bach, Beethoven, Debussy and many others. Her passion for music was as fiery and intense as her love of children, flowers, nature and sharing ideas on art, culture, politics, metaphysics, spirituality, and healing. She was a lifelong seeker and artist, always discovering new ways of healing, breakthroughs in scientific, spiritual, and artistic endeavors. She also loved great food and made many memorable meals featuring Chinese, Indonesian and international dishes.

She was a devoted wife, to her husband, Tom, and mother to her two children, Monica and Gus. She also had a loving connection with her grandson Jobim.

Above all, she loved the playful brilliant nature of children whom she had an immediate connection with. Her playful, artistic spirit was evident in everything she did, particularly her unique style of dressing, always sporting a fabulous hat, which made her immediately recognizable to many Taoseños, and New Yorkers before that.

She is survived by her husband Tom, her children Gus and Monica, son-in-law Jonathan Zeichner, grandson, Jobim Shen Qi Zeichner, brothers, Peter, Jin, and sister, Chiew.

This is love: to fly toward a secret sky, to cause a hundred veils to fall each moment. First to let go of life. Finally, to take a step without feet. - Rumi

Dear Monica,

I wanted to express my condolences. I never met your mother, but I could tell that she was a very special and beautiful person from the way that you had talked about her in the past. Best wishes during this time of your loss.

WHEN I THINK OF PENG

It is through the senses of vision, taste and sound.

The vision of Peng’s first appearance in the sun-washed living room of that traditional New England summer home on Martha’s Vineyard. The vivid colors of her kimono standing out against muted greens and browns and faded oriental carpets. Her elegant hair style and make up contrasted with our beach-bum casual garb. It must have taken courage for her to present herself as she wished to be seen, with no concessions to the culture she was about to marry into.

I can also see her fiancé, my “half uncle” Tom, fluttering around her like a protective mother bird, conveying a touching combination of nervousness and undisguised love, as he introduced her to his polite but puzzled family.

A later vision: years later we are neighbors on Manhattan’s Westside. Peng and I patronized the same small health food store and frequently I would see her there, where, still dressed in elegant oriental style, she stood out among the over-stocked shelves and shop-worn bins of grains. I recall her giving me detailed advice on the best products for good health, but again it is the sight of her that comes to mind today.

Her careful shopping must have been the source of the pleasurable memory of taste that lingers from the occasional meals we had in their Columbia University apartment, with its crowded rooms angled off a long narrow hallway. The art of culinary elegance in that challenging environment could not have come easily.

But perhaps the sense experience that has had the most lasting effect for me was the sound she produced on a grand piano that almost filled their living room. Sitting so close to the instrument as she played with passion and authority was a demonstration of how music can fill one’s whole being, stir the blood, and speak to the heart. This gift of the power of live music that she freely offered to her guests is one that I still recall when I counsel my mental health

Although I believe I only met her once when she was in Los Angeles, Peng was one classy lady. I am impressed with her very rich life, filled with music and family and intense passions. The legacy she leaves behind, in the spirit of Monica and her family (and Gus, whom I have never met) will carry her name and life forever.

Dear Monica and Gus,
My heart goes out to you both. I just read the news about Peng. I am so sorry to hear of Peng's passing, but I rejoice that she was ready and that it happened in such a relatively peaceful way. I am especially glad to hear that a chaplain helped you pray in a way that was right for you, as I am considering becoming one myself! I hope to be as good at being a chaplain as yours was for you.
No matter how peaceful her passing, I know it must continue to be a terrible shock to you. I will keep Peng, and you, Monica, Gus, and your father in my prayers.

Much love,
Sarah

Oh soul,
you worry too much.
You have seen your own
strength.
You have seen your own
beauty.
You have seen your golden wings.
Of anything less,
why do you worry?
You are in truth
the soul, of the soul, of the soul.

RUMI

Beautiful, loving tribute Monica. Give your grief some space. We love you.

"And as I move through an obscure and poppied world behold a shrouded form that seems to question me! Is this the dead Destroyer, Death? is this the end? Ah no! the pallid arms are raised, the veil divides a faint sigh breaths my name, and lo, Not night but dawn; not death, but life, or better, life through death, yea Death the Bride!"
(Thomas Gotch)
