Margaret Prince

Margaret Yenchius Prince passed away on September 30, 2009. She had been a long term resident of Los Alamos and then of Albuquerque.

Margaret was born on October 3, 1923 in Cleveland, Ohio, to Franciscus and Magdalene Yenchius, who came from Lithuania. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Richard Prince, who died in 1985, and by her three siblings. She is survived by her four loving children: Sandra P. Rudnick and husband Jon, Peter Prince and his wife Jane Bernard, Lissa Callirhoe and her husband Harlan Van Camp, and Thomas Richard Prince; five grandchildren: Jennifer and Jeffrey Rudnick (and wife Esther Rudnick-Van Mourik), and Kaitlin, Austin, and Derek Prince; and one great granddaughter: Norah Rudnick.

Margaret lived a full and wonderful life dedicated to service, to knowledge, and to making the world a more fair and honest place to live. Her entire life she was interested in politics and how governments functioned. During the Vietnam War she organized anti-war activities in Los Alamos and the rest of the state. Enduring activities within The League of Women Voters, the American Civil Liberties Union and the Mid-Rio Grande Conservancy District enabled her to make her contribution to the world. Later she became active at Senior Centers in Albuquerque, both taking and giving classes in a variety of subjects. Throughout her life she continued to take classes at UNM on subjects such as Navajo, Chinese, Native American Law and the American constitution. For the last several years she volunteered at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center and at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. A firm believer in the value of due process she was a long term member of the New Mexico Association of Parliamentarians and presided over many meetings in the Albuquerque area keeping discussions civil and productive. Although raised a Catholic, she joined the Unitarian Church many years ago and had remained very active within that community.

A memorial service for Margaret will be held on Saturday, October 24, at 3:00 PM, at the First Unitarian Church, 3701 Carlisle Blvd, N.E., Albuquerque. It is the familys request that donations in lieu of flowers be sent to either of the two museums where she volunteered, to the Unitarian Church, or to the Peace and Justice Center.
