Norma “Nundy” Irene Silva, 84, of Las Cruces and Santa Fe, NM, passed away Sunday, October 22, 2023, in the arms of her family and surrounded with love. Always a champion of the underdog, Norma had a nurturing and compassionate spirit. She was welcoming, inspiring, and determined, never hesitating to speak her mind.
Born in 1939 in Chamberino, NM, Norma grew up in Las Cruces. In 1955, she married the love of her life, Benjamin Silva. Partners of 68 years, Norma and Benny raised four children together: Bridgett, Benjamin Jr., Kristi, and Patrick. Norma also played a monumental role in raising her grandchildren. The love she showed her family knew no bounds.
Professionally, Norma served and retired as Director of Administrative Services of the New Mexico Environmental Department Division. An asset to her colleagues, Norma was respected by many in her field.
In her free time, Norma loved reading, watching her shows (“The Charmed Ones,” Gunsmoke, The Waltons), listening to all genres of music, going for drives, and most of all, spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren.
Norma was preceded in death by her mother, Elena Leggett, step-father, Dean Leggett, brothers, Bobby and Danny Chavez, and her beloved daughter, Kris Sweeney. She is survived by her husband, sister (Thelma), brother (Bill), children, grandchildren (Jacob, Mark, Stephanie, Alexandra, Marisa, Audrey, Benjamin III (Courtney), Dante, Zoe, Mayzi, and Iris), and best friend, Chris Martinez, as well as many other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Nundy meant so much to so many, and she will live on in our hearts forever. Te quiero hasta la luna Normita.

My condolences to Ben and all of Norma's family. I worked with Norma in the early 90's at the NM Environment Department. Norma was always helpful and great to work with. I remember her saving a young woman's job when she got crossways with the cabinet secretary. Norma intervened on her behalf, urging patience and a second chance. That showed such heart and compassion. I haven't forgotten that day. Thanks, Norma. God bless. David Coss

Thanks so much for your comment. My mom was a beautiful lady inside and out and always was willing to help others whenever she could.

To my beautiful caring mother that I will miss so much. Still talk to you every night Mom. I only remember the good times we all had…playing tag football, volleyball, baseball; watching you and Dad dance; your feet fights with Beebs; listening to you sing but never using the right words; you and dad making fun of each other; going to Maui and lots more. Everything with your smile. A second mom to many and an open door to all. Love and miss you Mom!
