Ray passed away at UNMH on February 10, 2017 surrounded by family and loved ones by his side. Ray was born in Los Alamos, NM. He graduated from Los Alamos High School as a “Hilltopper”. He continued his education at NMSU with a BA in Finance. At the time of his passing he resided in Santa Fe, NM.
He had many interests: music, motorcyles, reading and enjoying his furry companions, Tank and Sassy (previous Akitas – Kimo, Sumo, and Daisey).
Growing up in Los Alamos, his younger years were so much fun. He enjoyed riding his bike throughout the town and playing in the canyon on Rim Road. He enjoyed hanging out with Eric Payne and his buddies in high school and college. He enjoyed being the little brother because he was catered to by his older siblings.

Ray enjoyed most of all riding and talking about motorcycles. If you had a minute to talk with him about motorcycles, that minute would turn into hours and then a ride anywhere in New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Idaho! His weekends were for riding, especially with Mary, Johnny, Marie, Bobby, Gary, Larry/Debbie, Will and many many more friends. When he became ill he longed for those days again to escape his pain he had to endure.
His places of employment were with PCS Telecommunications based out of Los Angeles which was a contractor to the NM Correctional facilities; Santa Fe Municipal Court; State of New Mexico; TDI-subcontractor to LANS; and last place of employment was Los Alamos Medical Center. Ray became friends with many of the employees at his places of employment. He cherished his friendships with each one that he encounted. Ray always remained close to several of his co-workers when he left each employment –Fernando Villa, Liz Urioste, Scott Barr, Jan Bentley, Kevin Vigil, Rob Mulikin, Sandy Palmento, Pete Dominguez, Gary Milburn, Mark Karaffa, Brent Butler, Beverly Simpson, Sadie Valdez and many more.
Ray met Mary while working together at Santa Fe Municipal Court. Their friendship grew into marriage for 17 years. Their furry friends were very important to them along with Mary’s children, Anthony, Wendi, Bobby and grandchildren, Santiago and Samantha. Ray was their friend and always gave them the advice as a father –always wanting them to do more than less and will leave an everlasting impact on their lives. Ray was Mary’s soul mate together they enjoyed happy and sad times --but were true to each other.
Ray was very special to his mom, Ida. No one could make the best red Chile like his mother. He enjoyed the times he had with his family living in Los Alamos. He remembered spending time building an airplane with his dad and talking with him. Riding through the Jemez mountains --meeting up with the stunt people who were filming “Wild Hogs”. Driving to Colorado to visit Ralph and Judy to “pick up the little girl”…right Johnny? The hours of reminiscing with Johnny brought so much laughter for hours between the two. Those will be missed.
Ray was a special guy and will be missed by all. These were just a few memories that were important to him.
Ray, there’s no more pain that you need to hide. Thank you for touching our lives and showing us that even though we have pain and problems in our lives, we can still go through each day and smile.
Many “thank you’s” to Dr. Mills, Dr. Sauer, Dr. Robert Kossman, Dr. Chui, Dr. Robert Reidy, Nambe Drugs-Los Alamos, UNMH for all their knowledge, compassion and care for Ray’s health.
A memorial service will be on Sunday, February 19, 2017 at 11:00am. The address is 702 Bishops Lodge Road, Santa Fe, NM 87501.
If you would like to make any donation, please send to your favorite animal shelter near you, in his honor.

I am sadden to hear of Ray's Passing, he was a caring, thoughtful soul. I have been blessed to have worked with him at LAMC, his friendship will always be a bright light in my life. I have some great experiences talking to Ray about life, and motorcycles. He was a extremely genuine person, who thought of others! I will be thinking about Ray's freedom on the motorcycle, each time I ride his Yamaha FJR. RAY....... RIP MY FRIEND!

I got to know Ray through my brother Ron and remember when we'd stop by his Mom would call us Mr. Ronnie and Mr. Roger. Her meals were some of the best. I'll never forget Ray's physical strength and his ability to bench press the entire 300+ lb. weight set we had setup at his house. Going to school at NMSU in Las Cruces we attended many of the Aggie football games, various musical concerts and the popular at the time trips down to Juarez, Mexico. But some of the simplest times make for the best memories, such as hanging out late at night playing Frisbee. Ray brought a lot of joy too many people's lives. I will always cherish my many memories of him. My sincerest condolences to all of Ray's Family. God Bless. Roger Warren

Ray my friend, Thanks for being a great friend. You had an incredible impact on my life growing up. I will always remember our adventures.
I will always remember the great times we had camping in the Jemez or on the many trips to Missy's cabin. The times four wheeling in the jeeps, getting stuck and waiting for it to freeze to get out. The trips to Lubbock, Las Cruces, and Juarez. Prying huge boulders off the canyon edge with hydraulic jacks just to watch them roll down. "Combat" inter-tubing down the ski hill on those full moon nights. I remember tipping over that Hobie Cat on Corpus Christi Bay and watching you go straight to the bottom, that is the day I learned you swam like a brick. But most of all, I will always remember just hanging out, having "a beer" [sic] and few laughs. We always had fun, sometimes the more dire the situation, the more fun we had.
Mary, I do not think Ray found true happiness until he met you. You were everything to him. May you find peace in knowing that he was loved by so many and was such an important part of so many lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Eric and Kim Payne

I first met Ray when he became friends with my son Eric in at Pueblo JH and LAHS, the two of them were part of a close knit group of "jocks" who were all into various sports also getting into mischief along the way. Ray and the others spent countless hours at each others homes and in doing so became part of each others families. Mary you were the best thing to happen to Ray, after he married you he exuded a quiet happiness and contentment and he no longer had a lost quality about him. You made his life worth living so he could endure the pain and suffering. Ray all who knew you will miss you, and I will miss that giggle of yours most of all.
My deepest sympathy to all the Pacheco family. Heide and Roger Payne

Ray was a great friend growing up in Los Alamos to me and many others. Riding bikes, playing in the canyons, we had many many good times - he even made delivering newspapers fun. Ray was my foosball partner and we would play for hours at the bowling alley and Game Room, and his power pull shot was devastating to our opponents, who were often much older than us. Ray was also a dominant force on the football field, and "Sugar Bear" as he was called was a big reason why the Pueblo Junior High Braves went undefeated. So many good times with such a good friend- you will be in our hearts forever Ray! Warmest condolences to Ida and family and all of Ray's loved ones. See you at the Service - Daniel Guevara and Family
