Richard N. Tipton

Biography

Richard Nevin Tipton
May 20, 1946 January 13, 2011

Dick was an interesting, sincere and thoughtful man, totally without pretense or guile. Possessed of a creative and inquisitive intellect, he always surprised us with his unusual points of view and original wit. He was funny! He graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in Architecture, but the love of his life was cars. He owned and drove a Formula One race car and was a long-standing member of the Sports Car Club of America. If he wasnt driving, he stayed involved as a flagger. He loved maps, and spent many hours exploring the mountain roads of New Mexico. Occasionally, he painted beautiful watercolors of buildings and houses he admired. He was a true music-lover. As the son of Albert Tipton, flutist, and Mary Norris, pianist (both now deceased), he became the unofficial curator of their recordings, and also enjoyed playing his fathers flutes. His musical tastes were wide-rangingWilco was one of his recent favorites. He enjoyed the rich culture of Taos, and also tried to influence community policy by voicing his opinions at local town meetings. He is survived by his sister, Judy Tipton-Katzman of Manhasset, New York, and his nephew, Theo Katzman of Ann Arbor, Michigan. We are deeply saddened to lose this unique and special man.

Dick was my first cousin. He and I spent some wonderful times together in our youth. I recall him as a sweet, guileless, almost defenseless soul on a journey he sometimes did not entirely understand (and, who amongst us really does, after all?) but, always, he moved bravely forward with his life, his goals and with the knowledge that his family was there for him and he for them. Thank my luck to have seen him in 2010 after many years apart.

Dick was my cousin. I remember him as a delightful and funny person. We so enjoyed our yearly visits with him and his family. He loved cars, and was so happy when he was in that world. I am so deeply saddened by his passing.

Dearest Judy,
Our hearts go out to you in your time of sorrow. I always felt Dick was special in his own way and I always enjoyed seeing him. He was sincere and said it like was. I have one memory that stands out in my mind. When you and I were in Mexico with your folks and Dick. Christmas Eve we were singing Christmas Carols. Dick and I played the part of tne not terribly seasoned singers and had a good laugh over our singing abilities.
Our thoughts and love to you
Lynn and Don

Dick, You had your mother's smile and delightful gift of seeing the absurd in life. You were always curious and fascinated by so many aspects of this life experience. We will carry you with us in our hearts always.
