Rudy Atencio a former resident of Espanola and Rio Rancho, NM was called to be with the Lord on January 20, 2022 just five days after his 60th birthday.
Rudy was born and raised in Chama, NM. He felt the happiest in the mountains. Rudy was a skilled hunter and guide. He knew the mountains of Chama and northern NM thoroughly. His love for the outdoors transpired through his two daughters, who he had on a horse by 6 months old, giving them a love for the outdoors since a young age. Everywhere Rudy was, his daughters were right beside him. They referred to themselves as “The Three Musketeers.” Four wheeling, looking for arrow heads and riding horses were just a few of their favorite things to do together.
Rudy was a jack of all trades, always lending a hand to someone in need. He had a contagious smile and laugh. He was a friend to many and wore his heart on his sleeve. Rudy’s greatest accomplishment in life was becoming a grandfather. He was a big kid at heart, which shined through when he played with his grandchildren. He adored them, and they adored him.
He is preceded in death by his parents Juan Pablo and Cordilia Atencio, niece Autumn Gomez, several tio’s and tia’s, and his favorite uncle, who was like a father to him, Ramon Suazo.
He is survived by his brothers Paul Atencio & family, Armando Atencio & family, Eloy Atencio & family, his daughter Sabrina Curry, son in law Brandon Curry, granddaughters Adalyn & Tatum Curry, his daughter Kim Talachy, son in law Charles Talachy, granddaughters Nadali & Sparrow Talachy and grandson Noah Talachy. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and loving extended family and friends.
Serving as pallbearers are Nadali Talachy, Adalyn Curry, Tatum Curry and Sparrow Talachy. Honorary pallbearers are Matthew Atencio, Malerie Trujillo & Noah Talachy.
Due to COVID 19, capacity for services will be limited. Information about services for close family and friends can be obtained from his daughters Sabrina Curry & Kimberly Talachy.

I'm so blessed we connected after 40 years, We had lots to catch up on, and the one thing I will always remember is how much you love and adored your girls, and grand children. I wish we had married, it was not the timing for us, but I love you.. Your brother Armando was also so kind to me. Rudy, you will always be in my heart and someday we'll meet again in heaven.

I knew Rudy since the late 80's as he was "Rainbow Bread Delivery Man" while I was manager at Arby's & Burger King In Espanola. We remained friends through the years.

Paul, Armando, and Eloy we are so sorry to hear about Rudy. Growing up with all of you in Chama was awesome. We were always crossing the road to get to your house or you coming to our house. We didn't get to see Rudy when our parents, Eddie Vigil Jr and Luz Vigil, passed away in 2021. Our prayers are with all of you. May perpetual light shine upon Rudy and may his soul rest in peace.

Sabrina & Kim there are no words to express how sad my soul is to hear of my special, loving, dear friend Rudy's passing. My life was made so much better by the friendships formed in the summer of 79!!!! We not only became friends, we became family. Your father loved you girls and he was so proud of the women you have grown into. You and your children were his everything carry him in your hearts and memories until you are together again. I am deeply saddened to learn of Rudy's passing. He was one of my favorite most memorable students--always enthusiastic and optimistic. I was delighted to later meet up with him and Eloy at some social event in Albuquerque attended by several Chama people. He had grown up into a very handsome man; but his personality had not changed....a really terrific person...such a loss to his family and all of us who knew him. My sincere sympathy.
