Sarah Ann (Sally) Maze. Sally was born July 8th, 1936 and passed from us July 3rd, 2021. Her parents Hank and Helen Nelson had deep Wisconsin roots but moved to California shortly before Sally's birth in Santa Paula California. Soon the family moved to Stockton where Sally grew up. She loved spending summers at the cabin at Pinecrest (heaven in the hills) on the Stanislaus National Forest. She reveled in boating, swimming, hiking, fishing, cool pine scented mornings and wood smoke perfumed evenings, campfires, wildlife, outdoor movies, dances, looking for Elmer and especially horseback riding at Reno Sardella's Stable. All during the happy days following World War II. Sally was recognized as the top academic girl in her graduating class at the old Stockton High School. After spending time at UC Berkeley coupled with intensive skiing activities she bumped into a young man picking up trash on the beach at Strawberry lake. That was 1957. They fell in love and joined in a marriage that lasted for the next almost sixty four years. Sally was a career homemaker who took primary care and responsibility for everything. An important multifaceted career that included the children, the finances, education, travel, the pets, the house, the garden, which she loved and everything else. This was complicated by her partner's career which relocated them to seven National Forests and The San Francisco Regional Office of the USFS. The final move was Taos Forty six years ago. Sally's Taos years were filled with community activity and accumulating a wonderful extended family. She was a board member with Taos Sports Associates, Taos Art Association, and spent twenty years happily on the Taos School of Music Board. As an accomplished water color artist herself she volunteered freely in Taos Elementary Schools art education programs. She will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband, Cavill and brother, John Nelson (Howat). Her legacy and spirit will live on in her children, Robert Maze (Chris), Molly Maze (Eddy) and grandchildren, Emily, Allison, Carley, and Lawson.
A memorial gathering will be had at a future date.

Cavill,
When I saw you the other day I had no idea that Sally had passed away. What a tremendous loss for you and Bob and Molly. She was such a wonder and a bright shiny light. Thank you to you both for wonderful advice over the years; Sally taught me to sing the Girl from Ipanema while climbing to the peak. Just the right rhythm. My deepest condolences. --Roxanne

So sorry to hear of the passing of Sally. Will never forget her comical ways and artistic talent. I’ll never forget the lovely hand painted cookies she would make for everyone at ticket office at the Taos Ski Valley.
