Stuart Charles Stein

Stuart Charles Stein

April 26th, 1956 - January 17th, 2024

Biography

Stuart Charles Stein passed away on January 17, 2024 with family by his side. Stuart was born April 26, 1956 in Sedalia Missouri to John L. and Betty Lou Stein.

The youngest of 4 children, his family moved from Missouri back to Los Alamos in 1957, where he grew up and attended Los Alamos Public Schools until he graduated in 1974. While in high school, he developed a love for music and playing the drums. He was in the marching band and played in bands throughout his 20’s & 30’s in Los Alamos and Santa Fe.

After high school, Stuart joined the United States Marine Corps. like his father, mother and aunts and uncles before him. Due to injuries from a motorcycle accident that occurred while he was still in high school, he was unable to continue to serve his country and was honorably discharged. The injuries from this accident played a part in struggles that he carried with him for the remainder of his life.

Along with his passion for playing the drums, music was a big part of his life. He knew so much about music and bands, especially The Beatles, and had a huge record collection that he loved. Stuart was a history buff and enjoyed watching documentaries and reading historical non-fiction. He was also a believer in Christ and spent a good amount of time reading his Bible, taking notes, and memorizing scripture.  He liked fishing at his favorite places in the Jemez mountains and at the Los Alamos Reservoir.

Stuart worked most of his career in the grocery business, starting at Safeway in 1976.  Throughout every transition of the store from Safeway to Furr’s to Smith’s and finally over To Ed’s Supermarket, he loved what he did and the people he worked with.  Following that, he managed The Hill Top Gas station and Deli Mart.  He worked hard and always wanted to make customers feel welcome and happy.

He finished his career driving the van at Sombrillo Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. This job allowed him to continue his service around Los Alamos and with the residents themselves. He took joy in making sure they got to their appointments and loved to make them smile and laugh along the way.

Stuart always had a smile and a joke, even if he had to make one up. Even from an early age, he loved being funny and making people smile.

Stuart is survived by his sister, Carrie Stein of NY, his daughter Lori Ellard (Shane) of Knoxville TN, his son Stuart Stein, Jr. (Erin) of Los Alamos, and 9 grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Paula Stein of Albuquerque, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews whom he loved dearly.

Stuart is preceded in death by his sister, Donna Beth Long; his mother, Betty Lou Stein and father, John L. Stein; and most recently his brother, Stephen L. Stein.

A service will be held for Stuart Feb. 12, 2024 at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 12:30 p.m.

Please consider making a donation in his name to the Los Alamos Senior Center or any local food bank or church of your choice.

Please feel encouraged to leave messages for the family, stories of Stuart’s life, and photos here.

So sorry to the Stein family for your loss. Stuart was one of a kind, always had a joke and wanted to make people laugh. I worked with studog, (" that was what I called him") at sombrillo and aspen ridge, it was always an interesting day working with Stuart. I always told Stuart he should run for mayor cuz where ever we went, he knew everybody. My kids call him uncle Stuart. I have so many good and fun memories of Stuart that will last with me forever. We both loved music, so in saying goodbye to my brother if everyone could listen to "garden party" by Ricky Nelson, we argued on who sang that song better, Ricky Nelson or John fogerty, I say fogerty.

We are so sorry to hear about the loss of your father and grandfather. We were blessed to know Stuart through many different relationships with him in Los Alamos. He was a kind and gentle man who displayed a great deal of compassion to the riders of the "Sombrillo" bus and very helpful in the aisles of the different grocery stores he worked in. My you feel the love and support of family & friends, now and during the days ahead.

Stuart was kind - and a little crazy (but in the best way). He was a good friend to me in high school, and was an important member of my group of friends from Mr. Mac's Magic Band who helped me get through a very dark time in my life when my oldest brother passed away unexpectedly.

After high school I moved away from Los Alamos, but I always enjoyed seeing Stuart in the grocery store when I would come back home to visit my folks. He always had a smile and a zany story for me. The world has lost a good man.

Stuart was incredibly helpful to my mother when she was living at Sombrillo. He went out of his way to be friendly and kind. I remember that one time he came to work even when he wasn't feeling well just to get Mom to her dental appointment. He was invariably thoughtful and generous. I will always be grateful to him.

My sincere condolences to Stuart's family. He was a good friend for over 40+ years. Now he can play his drum kit on the big stage in that great gig in the sky. What most folks didn't know about Stuart is that he spoke fluent Spanish. He will be missed but never forgotten. Vaya con Dios amigo.

So sad to lose both my cousins Stephen and Stuart so close to each other. I have so many wonderful memories of visits to Los Alamos and holiday family gatherings. The Stein's really knew how to celebrate Christmas. They always had their tree up before Thanksgiving and seems like they didn't take it down until August (just kidding). We always called Stuart (Tutti), which he rightly came to hate. I do remember having several history discussions with him and remember disagreeing over General Custer's decisions at The Battle of The Little Big Horn. Those were enjoyable arguments though. He was a good kid and good man and I will keep him in my loving thoughts always. I thought it might be fun to include Stuart's Mom, Betty Lou, and my Mom, Joan, when they were young Marines. They were close Sisters.

I no longer live in Los Alamos, but see the online L.A. Daily Post. I was so sad to see this obituary. I didn't even know Stuart's name, but his face was so familiar to me over the years, seeing him at whichever grocery store. He was always friendly and polite and helpful. I'm thinking of his family and friends and will give a donation in his name to the Los Alamos Senior Center.
