Biography


Toby (Tobias) Ortiz a.k.a "HOSS" age 89, a resident of Santa Fe, NM passed away November 27, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Nambe, NM to Clorinda (Salazar) Ortiz and Joaquin E. Ortiz.
He married Sinfie (Roybal) Ortiz on October 27, 1951.

Toby is preceded in death by his parents Joaquin & Clorinda (Salazar) Ortiz, in-laws Cresenciano & Guadalupita Roybal, infant Son John Ortiz, sister & brother-in-law Mary (Ortiz) & Arturo Romero, brother & sister-in-law Antonio M. & Flossie (Lujan) Ortiz, sister & brother-in-law Lola (Ortiz) & Celedon Gonzales, sister Gloria (Ortiz) Lujan, brother-in-law Medardo (Urcinia) Roybal, sister-in-law Teresita (Roybal) & (Ramon Sandoval) & (Juan)Tafoya, sister-in-law Elvira (Ortiz) Roybal, sister-in-law Rosella (Roybal) & Ramon I. Ortiz, brother-in-law Tiofilo Vigil, brother-in-law Antonio M. & Frances Roybal, and sister-in-law Mary (Maes) Roybal.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years Sinfie (Roybal) Ortiz, daughter Yvonne Ortiz (Roman J. Solano Sr.), granddaughter Angelique (Joseph Holder), great-grandson Oryon R. Blay, daughter Debbie (Fred P. Vigil), grandchildren: Tommy Vigil, Paul Vigil & Amanda Vigil
great-grandchildren: Heaven, Pablo, Tommy Jr., Amanda, Melina, Matthew, and Emily, brother-in-law’s Joe Lujan Sr. and Eberto Roybal, sister-in-law: Esther (Roybal) Vigil and many family members and friends.

Toby was born on 08/28/1927 in Nambe, NM. He graduated from Pojoaque High School, Pojoaque, N.M. Upon graduation he joined the US Army, served in the 25th Infantry and fought in the pacific during WWII. He followed in his family tradition: Great-Grandfather Antonito Sandoval fought during the Civil War on the Union Side, Father Joaquin E. Ortiz during WWI fought from France to Berlin, Germany, older Brother Antonio M. Ortiz and brother-in-law Eberto Roybal fought in the Philippines, all served in the army. Brother-in-law Tiofilo Vigil fought in Europe during WW II served in the Army Air Corps, brother-in-law Juan Tafoya fought in WWII, son-in-law Roman J. Solano Sr. USMC fought in Vietnam. Brother-in-laws: Medardo Roybal, Antonio M. Roybal, and Joe Lujan also served in the army.

Toby returned from WWII where he began his career working first in Los Alamos for the Zia Company, N. M. State Penitentiary as a Correction Officer. In 1955 we moved to San Pedro, California where he worked for Aronca & Douglass Aircraft Companies. In 1959 Toby began his career as Letter for the United States Postal Service and he retired in 1989 after 30 years.

Toby was a member of Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 2951 in Santa Fe, NM, he was the past post commander of the VFW 1969-1970, 1982-1983. He was a founding member of the VFW Honor Guard and served on the Honor Guard from 1963-2015. During his 52 years as the Officer of the Day honoring his fallen comrades-in-arms where he would spend many hours at the National Cemetery in Santa Fe and anywhere in Northern NM where military honors were needed. He also belongs to the American Legion Post 0013 Albuquerque, NM, GI Forum, Elks Lodge 401 Santa Fe, NM and The National Association of Letter Carriers.

Thank you to all the family, friends and neighbors whose love is greatly appreciated during the loss of our beloved Toby. A special thanks to Cleo Romero, Rosemary Medrano and Teresa Ortiz.

A Rosary will be recited Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. at Santa Maria de la Paz Catholic Community. Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Santa Maria de la Paz Catholic Community. Interment to follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
