Biography

Victor Howell Sandham, 79, of Santa Fe, NM, and East Greenwich and Riverside, Rhode Island, passed away on October 21st, 2023, peacefully and with loved ones surrounding, in Santa Fe.

Victor was born on May 18th, 1944, in Trenton, NJ, the son of Victor C. and Eleanor Fagans Sandham.

He graduated from West Chester High, then Penn State in 1966, and later SUNY Pace with an MBA. He served the United States in the Army from 1969-1971 and was honorably discharged.

He married his college sweetheart, Marnie Yinger on April 8th, 1967 in New Kensington, PA and was married 56 years to Marnie until his death. After a European honeymoon, they moved to NYC to follow the career path of an Ad-man. They had two children, Ian Howell and Lauren Jane (Brenneman).

Vic, as he was known, rose to the highest levels of management in the Marketing and Advertising industry, with such companies as Grey, J&J, M&M/Mars, MCA, CVS, and Ralston Purina. He had many great achievements in his prolific advertising career, traveling the world filming commercials, and was nominated for a Clio, but eventually tired of the corporate nomadic life that came with it. He became a Certified Financial Planner in 1998, and worked as such for Merrill Lynch until his retirement in 2014. Vic had Parkinson’s and he and family struggled with the difficulties of this disease for his last 14 years.

He loved black & white photography and especially loved his entire family and enjoyed sharing his loves of skiing and sailing, and the beaches of Long Beach Island, New Jersey with them.

Vic was greatly supportive and always had a hug and smile for his children, and worked tirelessly to provide for his wife and family.

Remaining to cherish Vic’s memory are Marnie, Ian & Sarita, Lauren & Jehrod, and their son, Isaac, his sister Lee, her husband Rick Evans, and daughter Brittany, his brother-in-law Roy Yinger and his partner, Kate Shuster, his brother David’s daughters, Becky, and her husband Dan Mathwin, and Jessie, and her husband Chris Swope, and their two daughters, Lily and Penny.

Preceding Vic in death are his brother, David Sandham, and his parents Nel and Vic Sandham.

I worked with Vic in US Army TIPS Magazine 1971-1972. There were only four or five of us drafted enlisted guys on the staff of that little magazine. He could write. I wasn’t so good at it.
I was amazed that he, and this other writer, Jim Stevenson, (who also passed away recently), retained great senses of humor in those senseless times.
Boy, could he tell stories. Like, how he was almost too old to be drafted when he got his draft notice, just as they were about to move into a great new place in Brooklyn. He talked Penn State football, Ad Age Magazine, photography, and he liked his VW Bug.

Thoughtful guy. One day, the two of us were on assignment somewhere and we were sitting at a table by a picture window in a dining room, and there was this small lake outside and a little sailboat passing by. Vic said that scene made him think that he hoped that life (in the Army) wasn’t passing him by, just like that pretty little sailboat. But obviously it didn’t pass him by.
Eternal memory.
