Zacarias F Pana

Zacarias F Pana

May 30th, 1947 - May 2nd, 2021

Biography

Zacarias Florencio Paña, 73, a resident of Fairview, NM went home to be with the Lord on May 2, 2021, with his loving family and friends by his side.

Zacarias was born in Embudo, NM. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Sylvia Paña, his faithful brother Joseph Paña and their parents Zacarias Paña, Sr. and Sofia Paña, father and mother-in-law Hilario and Veronica Martinez, sisters-in-law, Idalia Gallegos, Lucy Gallegos; and brother-in-law Larry Hliario Martinez.

Zacarias is survived by two sons; Zac Paña and his spouse Rolanda Paña. Isaac Paña. One daughter, Armaida Santana and her spouse, Lorenzo Santana. Seven grandchildren: Alyssa Paña, Isaac Paña (his faithful caretaker and sidekick), Ariela, Esaias, Santiago, Elario and Ezekiel Santana. Two great-grandchildren Sophiya and Daniel Bryant. Sisters-in-law: Annabelle Paña, Joyce Martinez, Cecelia Vargas and Virginia Vigil. Along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a few great compadres including the oldest basketball league in northern New Mexico.

Zac was proud to serve his community as a police officer. He retired as LT. and went back to serve as Deputy Chief totaling his time to the City of Española to thirty plus years.

Whether you knew him as Dad, Grandpa, Uncle Zac, Paña, LT or Deputy Chief, he was the glue that bonded, the man who listened, the one that went the extra mile whether it was a favor, money, just a ride or the Police Officer that gave someone a helping hand. He never expected anything in return.

The holy rosary will be recited and prayed for Pana at the St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Alcalde on Tuesday, May 18 2021 at 10AM, mass will follow at 11AM. Burial will take place after the mass at the Catholic Cemetery in Alcalde. Pana Family has entrusted his care to Rivera Family Funerals and Cremations.

The Family would like to thank Del Corazon Hospice Care for their gentle, kind care of Zac while he was home in his last days. We appreciate the time Jacob, Amanda, Myra, and Don took with our Dad and spent with the family.

The “Boss” was the most genuine and sincere person I knew. When I first started in law enforcement, he would scare the hell out of me for he was a giant of a man. He went on to be a giant for me in so many ways and was a big teddy bear, who could always hold his own. Definitely a legend amongst law enforcement and his memory will never fade. Many of “Us” became successful in our careers and personal life because of the guidance and genuine care that he showed. I have so many memories and stories and his legend lives on!! Blessings to all

My heart is broken. Rest In Peace, Mr. Zac.

To Mr. Paña’s entire family I send my condolences. This huge loss to you is also a great loss to the Española Valley. Your daddy was a very beautiful, kind, respectful and respected man in my life. I was one of the Española Police Cadets back in the day, and Mr. Paña was a role model and mentor. I’m so sorry for your loss. May our Heavenly Father comfort you as only He can and may your dear daddy rest in perpetual light and peace with your beautiful mother. Keep his legacy alive in his grandchildren so that they, too will someday grow up to be pillars of peace, honor and comfort to others.

To Zac's entire family....please accept my heartfelt condolences. When I began my law enforcement career in 1979, Zac was one of my supervisors. I learned so much from Zac, lessons that kept me safe throughout my career. He taught me to be a professional,
to serve with honor, and to always respect the citizens we served. Despite my moving from the valley and continuing my law enforcement career elsewhere, I never forgot Zac. He was not just a mentor, but a true friend. I will never forget you Zac, rest easy my brother!

Dearest Zach, Isaac, Armaida & family,my sincerest condolences on the passing of Uncle Zac. I was looking forward last year to go back home and claim my promised chicken adobo and egg rolls he told me he was going to make for me on my next trip home. Every trip home he was one of the members of the Cristobal & Tomasita Martinez clan that I could have serious history discussions with. May he be able to finally rest after such a long health battle and a sudden passing of Aunt Silvia. He was my dad’s eternal hunting and state basketball tournament partner and they both were my brothers baptismal godparents. Requiescat in pace.
